The 2009 flu pandemic is a global outbreak of a new strain of influenza virus, officially named the "new H1N1", first identified in April 2009, and commonly called "Swine flu." It is thought to be a mutation of four known strains of the influenza A virus, subtype H1N1: one endemic in (normally infecting) humans, one endemic in birds, and two endemic in pigs (swine).
The outbreak began in Mexico, with evidence that Mexico was already in the midst of an epidemic for months before the outbreak was recognized. Soon after, their government closed down most of Mexico City's public and private offices and facilities to help contain the spread. In early June, as the virus spread globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak to be a pandemic. The WHO has raised the Influenza Pandemic Alert to the highest level which is 6. Already India has seen over 1000 confirmed cases of Swine Flu and the threat of a full blown epidemic in India is very real. The best we citizens can do is keep ourselves informed about the happenings and the steps we can take to prevent the spread of the flu. With most of the affected people fitting the profile of a person with internet access, we believe the internet is the first place that people would come looking for information like symptoms, who to contact etc. Indiansplash.com is an attempt to bring all the necessary information in one place. India cannot afford to fall sick. Keep yourself and others informed. |

WHO recommendations for the post-pandemic period
The world is now in the post-pandemic period. Based on knowledge about past pandemics, the H1N1 (2009) virus is expected to continue to circulate as a seasonal virus for some years to come. While the level of concern is now greatly diminished, vigilance on the part of national health authorities remains important. Such vigilance is especially critical in the immediate post-pandemic period, when the behaviour of the H1N1 (2009) virus as a seasonal virus cannot be reliably predicted.
